About HAM Inc

Hoffman Automotive Machine Inc. is a small business owned by me, Len Hoffman. I offer personalized, detailed oriented, custom cylinderhead service. My goal is to provide every customer with the best possible products and techniques available. Why do my heads consistently outperform my competition on the dyno and at the track? It's my dedication to the myriad details that others overlook. I approach cylinderhead work with what I call the 'bucket approach'. I pay close attention to all of the subtle details that alone don't make much difference, but together add up to a noticeable improvement in performance and reliabililty. It's these details, all of which go into the 'bucket', that separate HAMInc. from the competition.

About Len Hoffman

Len HoffmanAs a second-generation automotive machinist I have a lifetime of experience that I draw from every day.

One of my earliest memories is from the '60's sitting in a Zink Formula Vee built by my father, Rich Hoffman. In 1970 he bought a Stuska dyno, which he still uses. In 1972 he and my mother opened The Bug House in Columbia, SC. They are still in business today, though the name has changed to Import Specialties. Through the '70s and into the '80s my father's Type I engines were virtually unbeatable, winning over 200 races on a combination of asphalt ovals, dirt ovals and road courses, and they did so with remarkable reliability. My fathers devotion to R&D (research and design) was legendary, and it rubbed off on me at a very early age.

Though I cut my teeth on Type I VW's, it was only natural that I developed a very deep appreciation for the Porsche marque.

Fast-forward to the 80's when that devotion spread to BMW and it's wonderful line of OHC(overhead camshaft) engines. Since 1988 I have developed many restoration and performance techniques for air and water-cooled VW, Porsche, and BMW cylinderheads. Along the way I have race-prepped heads for ITB (SCCA's Improved Touring B class ) Alfa Romeo, ITB Golfs, Spec Miata, 2.3L Ford, and of course the VW/Porsche Type IV, to name just a few.
